Shamir Autograph Intelligence or Essilor Varilux XR: the two Enhanced Platinum progressives

Shamir Autograph Intelligence or Essilor Varilux XR: the two Enhanced Platinum progressives

Platinum is the top band of the Vision Express progressive menu. In the Enhanced tier, two lenses sit together: Shamir Autograph Intelligence from Israel and Essilor Varilux XR from France. They are the two lenses our team names first when the question is a wider intermediate zone, the part of the lens you use for a computer screen and the dashboard of a car.

Why the intermediate zone matters

A progressive lens has three working distances: far, intermediate and near. Intermediate is roughly arm's length. It covers your laptop, your second monitor, the stove, the car dashboard and the board in a meeting room. If you spend most of your day there, a lens with a wider intermediate corridor is easier to live with. That is the reason both of these lenses appear on our list for desk work, dual monitors and wearers over 40.

The lens menu does not print thickness or index differences, so we will not claim either lens is thinner. We can compare what is printed: origin, tier, lead time and offer.

Shamir Autograph Intelligence

  • Origin: Israel.
  • Lead time: 7 to 9 days.
  • Who it suits: office workers, people with dual monitors, and anyone who wants the widest option we name for presbyopia after 40.
  • Offer note: Shamir lines generally carry Buy 1 Get 1. Confirm the current offer in store.

Essilor Varilux XR

  • Origin: France.
  • Lead time: 3 to 5 days.
  • Who it suits: the same desk-heavy wearer, and anyone who needs the glasses sooner. It is also the lens our team names for dual-monitor days.
  • Offer note: Essilor lines generally carry a second pair at 50% off. Confirm the current offer in store.

A third use: polarized progressives

Custom-made progressives can be ordered polarized. That includes the Shamir Autograph range and Essilor Varilux XR. If you drive or ride on wet roads and want sun glare control in a progressive, ask the team about a polarized pair. Polarized lenses can make some phone and dashboard screens look dim, so test your own devices in store before you decide.

How they differ in practice

  • Waiting time. Varilux XR is typically 3 to 5 days. Autograph Intelligence is 7 to 9.
  • Origin. France and Israel. Both are established lens makers with their own design approach.
  • Offer structure. A second pair at 50% off against Buy 1 Get 1. Ask which applies when you order.

A Philippine scenario

Picture a BPO team lead in Ortigas who works two monitors and a headset for nine hours, then commutes home on a crowded bus with a phone in one hand. Her day is mostly intermediate and near. A Platinum band lens suits that pattern, because most of her seeing happens in the zones where a wider design helps. For a retired teacher who reads, cooks and watches TV, a Gold lens may be enough. Your day decides, not the price tier.

Do you need Platinum?

Not always. Silver and Gold lenses correct your vision well, and many people wear them happily. Platinum is a step up in lens design, and the question to ask your optometrist is whether your daily tasks make that step worth it. If you spend long hours on screens, the answer is more often yes. If you are mostly reading and walking around, you may be well served lower in the menu. The team will not push the top band if your exam does not call for it.

What the exam checks first

The Vision7 exam begins with your case history, which is where we learn about your screen hours and your work. Subjective refraction fine-tunes your add power. The binocular exam checks that both eyes work together at the distances you use. Those three steps carry the most weight when choosing between these two lenses.

Book your Vision7 eye test

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam records your add power and how your eyes team up at screen distance, which is what a wide-corridor progressive is cut from. Then ask for Shamir Autograph Intelligence at the counter if you want the widest option and can wait 7 to 9 days, or Essilor Varilux XR if you need it in 3 to 5 days. Each pair comes with free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment, and a 1-year warranty.
