Why do your glasses keep sliding down your nose?
You push them up, and two minutes later they have crept down again. It is one of the small daily annoyances of wearing glasses, and in our heat it gets worse the moment you start to sweat. The good news: sliding glasses are almost always a fit problem, and fit problems can be fixed. Here is what is going on and what to do about it.
Fit, not fate
Glasses are meant to rest in balance across three points: your nose and both ears. When that balance is off, gravity wins and they drift down. This is not something you have to live with, and it is not because your nose is wrong. It means the frame is not adjusted to your face yet.
The common reasons
- The frame is too wide. If it is broader than your face, there is nothing holding it in place and it simply slips.
- The temple arms are loose. The arms that go over your ears should follow their shape and hold gently. If they have splayed out, they let the frame slide forward.
- The nose pads are off. On frames with adjustable pads, pads set too wide give the frame nothing to grip.
- Heat and sweat. In this climate, oil and perspiration make even a decent fit slippery, especially at midday or after a commute.
Quick things you can try
A few gentle steps can help in the short term. Wipe your nose pads and the bridge so they are not slick with oil. Keep the lenses and frame clean. If your frame has soft grip pads available, they can add a little hold. Be careful bending metal arms yourself, though, it is easy to overdo it and warp the frame or loosen a screw.
Why a professional adjustment is the real fix
Most sliding comes down to millimeters, and that is exactly what a proper adjustment corrects. An optician can gently reshape the temple arms to your ears, set the nose pads to the right width, and rebalance the frame so it sits level and stays put. It takes a few minutes and it is the difference between fighting your glasses all day and forgetting you have them on.
You do not have to pay for it
Fit is not a one-time thing. Frames loosen with everyday wear, and your glasses drift out of alignment over months. That is why we offer free lifetime servicing, including free custom fitting and adjustment, on eyewear from Vision Express. If your glasses are sliding, you can walk in and have them set right, as many times as you need.
When the lens is the weight problem
A strong prescription makes a heavy lens, and a heavy lens drags the frame down your nose no matter how well the arms are set. Thinner material is the fix. It takes weight out of the edge of the lens, where a strong grade piles it up.
Stop pushing, start wearing
Visit your nearest Vision Express store and we will reset the fit while you wait. Free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment comes with every pair from us, so you can walk in as often as you need and never pay for it. If it has been a while, a Vision7 eye test confirms your grade at the same time, so we are fitting the right lens and not just the old one.
If your prescription is strong, ask for the Tokai BIR-W at the counter. It is thinner and lighter across the edge in a strong grade, so there is simply less weight to slide in the first place, and the frame stays where we set it. Free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning is included too, which keeps oil off the bridge and pads. Glasses should disappear on your face, not remind you they are there every few minutes.
