Why do my glasses fog up in the Philippines, and what actually stops it?

Why do my glasses fog up in the Philippines, and what actually stops it?

You walk out of an air-conditioned mall into the afternoon heat and your glasses turn white. Or you step into a jeepney, a kitchen or a wet market and cannot see for ten seconds. If you live in the Philippines, you know this moment well. It is annoying, and it is also easy to explain.

What fogging actually is

Fog on a lens is condensation. Warm, humid air meets a surface that is cooler than the air around it. The water vapor in the air turns into tiny droplets on the lens. Those droplets scatter light, so everything looks hazy.

In the Philippines the air is warm and humid most of the year, so the gap between an aircon-cooled lens and the outside air is large. That gap is the whole cause. It is not a sign of a poor lens or a poor frame.

The situations that fog glasses most

  • Leaving an air-conditioned space for outdoor heat, then clearing in under a minute as the lens warms up.
  • Wearing a face mask that pushes warm breath up behind the lens.
  • Cooking over a pot or opening a rice cooker or oven.
  • Riding or commuting in the rain, where humidity is highest.
  • Exercising, where heat and sweat build up behind the frame.

What helps

Let the lens adjust. Pause at the door for a few seconds. As the lens reaches the outside temperature, the fog clears by itself. Wiping a fogged lens with a dry cloth mostly smears the droplets around.

Check the fit. A frame that sits very close to your cheeks and brow traps warm air against the lens. A small adjustment to the nose pads or the frame angle creates a little airflow gap. This is a free service at our stores, and it is part of free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.

Fix the mask seal. If you wear a mask, a snug fit across the nose bridge keeps breath from escaping upward. Fit the mask first, then the glasses on top.

Keep lenses clean. A film of oil or sunscreen on a lens gives condensation more to cling to and makes the haze worse. Clean with lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth, not your shirt.

Do not rely on home tricks. Soap films and toothpaste are passed around online. They can leave residue or scratch lenses. If you want a fog-reducing treatment, ask the team what is suitable for your lenses before putting anything on them.

What a lens can and cannot do

No lens makes you immune to fog. Fog depends on temperature, humidity and airflow, not on the lens alone. What a good lens and coating do help with is smudges and cleaning. In humid weather, oils, sweat and sunscreen land on lenses all day, and an easy-to-clean surface makes it simpler to keep them clear. We will not promise an anti-fog result that no lens can guarantee.

When fog is a sign of something else

If your vision feels hazy even when your lenses are clean and dry, that is not condensation. Blurry vision after cleaning can mean your prescription has changed or something else is going on. Do not guess. A Vision7 exam will tell you.

Book your Vision7 exam

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. Our licensed optometrists will check whether your prescription is still right, so you know any haze is weather and not your eyes. Then ask for Opulens Ultra 1.60 at the counter. It is in stock and ready in 20 minutes, and it is the lens we point humid-day wearers to for smudges and everyday wear. Bring your frame in as well: we will check the fit for airflow. Every pair comes with a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
