Tokai BIR-W or Tokai HR-W? Choosing between Enhanced and Best single vision from Japan

Tokai BIR-W or Tokai HR-W? Choosing between Enhanced and Best single vision from Japan

If your prescription is strong, the lens edge can be the first thing people notice about your glasses. Two Tokai single vision lenses on the Vision Express menu address that: Tokai BIR-W in the Enhanced tier and Tokai HR-W in the Best tier. Both are made in Japan. Both take 10 to 12 days to arrive.

What the menu tells us

  • Tokai BIR-W is Enhanced tier single vision, and is the lens we suggest for thick lenses and strong prescriptions.
  • Tokai HR-W is Best tier, the top of the single vision menu, and is the lens we suggest for the thinnest result.
  • Lead time is 10 to 12 days for both.

The menu does not publish index figures for these two, so we will not quote any. Ask the optician to show you how each looks with your own prescription and frame. A strong prescription behaves very differently in a small round frame and a large square one.

Why strong grades make thick lenses

A stronger prescription needs more lens material to bend light. In a minus prescription, the edge grows thicker. The bigger the frame, the more edge shows. Our earlier article on thick lenses explains this in detail. Frame choice and lens choice work together: a smaller frame hides more edge.

Who should consider BIR-W

If your prescription is moderate to strong and you want a noticeable step up from the Starter tier, BIR-W is the sensible place to begin the conversation. It sits in Enhanced, so you are already above the entry lenses.

Who should consider HR-W

If your prescription is among the stronger ones, you wear glasses all day and appearance matters to you, HR-W is the top single vision option. It also suits people who have been unhappy with thick edges before.

Who probably does not need either

If your prescription is mild, a Starter or other Enhanced lens may serve you well. Paying for the top tier on a light prescription may bring little visible difference. Be honest about your numbers and ask the optometrist for an honest answer.

Frames matter as much as lenses

Ask for frames with a smaller eye size for strong prescriptions. Rounder shapes often hide edge better than wide rectangular ones. Bring your frame choice into the conversation with the optician before the lens order is placed, because the lens is cut to the frame.

Plan for the wait

Ten to 12 days is a real wait. If you rely on your glasses for work, ask about a temporary pair. Basic 1.50, Opulens Advanced 1.60 and Opulens Ultra 1.60 are in stock and ready in 20 minutes, which can bridge the gap.

Your next step

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam gives the precise prescription that decides how thick your lenses will be.

Ask for Tokai BIR-W if you have a strong prescription and want a step up. Ask for Tokai HR-W if you want the top single vision lens on the menu. Every pair has a 1-year warranty and free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and custom fitting and adjustment.
