Tired eyes at the screen: what actually helps, and where blue light lenses fit

Tired eyes at the screen: what actually helps, and where blue light lenses fit

By 4pm your eyes feel dry and heavy. The words on the monitor swim a little. You rub your eyes, close a tab, open another. It is the most common eye complaint we hear from Filipino office workers, BPO agents and students. Blue light gets most of the blame, but the picture is wider than that.

What causes screen fatigue

Several things happen at once during long screen sessions:

  • You blink less. People blink noticeably less when concentrating on a screen, and the tear film dries out. Air-conditioned rooms make it worse.
  • Your focus muscles stay switched on. Holding a close focus for hours is tiring.
  • Your setup may be off. A screen that is too high, too low, too bright or too close adds strain.
  • Your prescription may be out of date. A small uncorrected error makes your eyes work harder all day.
  • Blue light may play a part. It is one factor among several, and not the main one.

What helps first

Blink on purpose. Every few minutes, close your eyes fully and open them slowly. It sounds silly and it works for many people.

Use the 20-20-20 habit. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 6 metres away for 20 seconds.

Fix your setup. Keep the monitor about an arm's length away, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Reduce glare from windows and overhead lights.

Deal with the dry air. Do not point the aircon vent at your face. If your eyes still feel dry, ask the optometrist what suits you, since dry eye has several causes.

Get your eyes checked. Many people with tired eyes have a small uncorrected prescription or early presbyopia. No filter will fix that.

Where blue light lenses fit

A blue light lens filters part of the blue-violet light from screens. Some wearers find it more comfortable. It is a comfort option. We do not claim it prevents eye disease, protects your retina or cures headaches. If you have the habits above sorted and want to try one, the Vision Express lens mat names two lenses for screen fatigue:

  • Essilor Blue Light Single Vision, made in France, with a 3 to 5 day lead time.
  • Opulens Blue Light 1.56, ready in 1 to 2 days.

For a same-day option, Opulens Advanced 1.60 is a blue light lens kept in stock and can be ready in 20 minutes.

When tired eyes are a warning sign

See an optometrist promptly if you have:

  • Headaches that come with reading or screen work every day.
  • Double vision, or text that will not stay clear.
  • Sudden changes in vision, flashes of light or new floaters.
  • Eye pain or redness that does not settle.

These are not problems for a lens or a rest break. Sudden changes and pain need care quickly.

If you are over 40

Trouble focusing on near work in your 40s is often early presbyopia. Blue light lenses will not fix it. Ask about progressives or a dedicated desk lens. The mat names Shamir Autograph Intelligence and Essilor Varilux XR for desk work and dual monitors.

A realistic routine

  • Morning: check your screen height and brightness.
  • Every 20 minutes: look away for 20 seconds.
  • Lunch: leave the desk and go outside for a few minutes.
  • Evening: give your eyes a rest from the phone.

Book your Vision7 exam

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam checks your prescription, how your eyes work together and the health of the front of your eye, which is where most screen-related complaints are sorted out. If a comfort lens is right for you, ask for Essilor Blue Light Single Vision for everyday screen work, or Opulens Advanced 1.60 if you need it the same day.

Every pair comes with a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
