Rainy season and glasses: six habits for wet commutes, fogged lenses and streaky glare

Rainy season and glasses: six habits for wet commutes, fogged lenses and streaky glare

From June to November, a typical Philippine commute means rain on your lenses, steam on the inside, and headlights smeared across both. Glasses do not fail in the rain. Habits do. Here are six that make a real difference.

1. Dry your lenses the right way

Do not wipe a wet lens with your sleeve or a paper tissue. Grit sits in the water and drags across the coating. Shake off the droplets, then pat dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Keep one cloth in your bag and one at your desk.

2. Rinse before you rub

If your lenses are muddy or salty from a splash, rinse them under lukewarm tap water first. Rubbing dry dirt scratches. A drop of mild dish soap, rinsed well, cleans oily smudges.

3. Expect fogging and manage it

Fog appears when warm, humid air meets a cooler lens, such as when you step out of an air-conditioned mall. Pause for a few seconds before you walk on. Lifting the glasses slightly away from your face can help air move behind them. Our guide on why glasses fog in Philippine humidity goes deeper.

4. Mind the frame fit

Wet skin and sweat make glasses slide. A frame that fit in the store may loosen after a few weeks of heat and rain. Come back for an adjustment. Free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment covers this.

5. Plan for glare on wet roads

Wet asphalt throws back headlights and brake lights. If you drive or ride, polarized lenses reduce glare reflected off flat, wet surfaces in daylight. At night, glare and halos have other causes, such as an out-of-date prescription, so an eye test comes first. Polarized lenses are not a fix for night driving problems.

6. Carry a hard case

A loose pair in a bag with keys, a wet umbrella and a phone gets scratched. A hard case is cheap protection. Keep it in your bag, not in your car on a hot day.

A word on coatings

We will not make promises about coatings beyond what the lens menu states. What we can say is that Opulens Ultra 1.60 is the lens we point to for humidity, sweat and smudges. Ask the team what it does and does not do, and how to care for it.

Do not forget your own eyes

Rainy season brings red, itchy eyes for some people, from dust, allergies or infection. If your eyes are red, painful or discharging, see an eye care professional. Do not treat it with leftover drops.

Rainy day timing

If your glasses break in a downpour or get lost on a flooded commute, a same-day pair helps. Basic 1.50, Opulens Advanced 1.60 and Opulens Ultra 1.60 are in stock and ready in 20 minutes. Our broken glasses guide explains the first hour.

Your next step

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam makes sure your prescription is current, which matters most when visibility is poor on a wet road.

Ask for Opulens Ultra 1.60 if you want a lens built for humid, smudgy days. It is in stock and ready in 20 minutes. If you drive or ride and want less reflected glare, ask about Shamir Opulens Exact ordered polarized. Every pair carries a 1-year warranty and free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and custom fitting and adjustment.
