Nikon Ultimate Z or Tokai Neuroselect 9X: the two Premium lenses in the Platinum band
The top row of the Vision Express progressive menu is the Platinum band, and the Premium tier within it holds two lenses, both made in Japan: Nikon Ultimate Z and Tokai Neuroselect 9X. They sit at the same level on the menu. This post covers how to decide between them without pretending the menu tells you more than it does.
What the menu actually says
- Nikon Ultimate Z: Japan, 3 to 5 days.
- Tokai Neuroselect 9X: Japan, 10 to 12 days.
That is the verified difference. Both are Premium tier, Platinum band, and both can be custom ordered, including polarized for outdoor use. Neither is on the Express list.
The lead time is the practical divider
A 3 to 5 day wait fits most people who are replacing a pair. A 10 to 12 day wait fits people who are not under pressure, who have a working pair to wear in the meantime, or who are planning ahead of travel. If you have no spare progressive pair, the Nikon timeline is safer.
Who tends to look at Platinum
- Heavy daily progressive wearers who use them from morning to night.
- People with a long working day at multiple distances, such as a desk, a phone, a meeting room and the road.
- People who struggled with a lower-tier progressive and want to move up. Our separate guide on moving up a tier lists the signs.
- Those who drive often and want the progressive made for their prescription and frame.
What the tier does not guarantee
A higher tier does not remove adaptation. Every progressive needs an adjustment period. A higher tier is also not a cure for a wrong prescription or a poorly fitted frame. Fit and measurements decide a great deal, which is why our optometrists and opticians take them carefully before the order goes in. We do not rank Nikon Ultimate Z above Tokai Neuroselect 9X or the other way around. They are two options at one level.
Questions to bring
- How many hours a day will I wear them, and at what distances?
- Do I drive at night, and does glare bother me?
- Do I need a second pair for the computer or for the sun?
- Can the lens be ordered polarized for the commute?
Comparing against the other Platinum lenses
Platinum also includes Essilor Varilux Liberty, Opulens Pro Max from Hong Kong, Shamir Autograph Intelligence and Essilor Varilux XR. If you are choosing within the band, the Premium Japanese pair is where the longest-wearing, highest-priced options sit. Ask the team to show how the quote compares across all of them, because prices live on the in-store menu and can change.
The Vision7 exam decides it
Your prescription, the way your eyes work together, your frame and your working day all feed the choice. We do not choose a Platinum lens from a chart. We choose it from your exam.
Next step
Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam, run by licensed optometrists, gives us the prescription and binocular results a Premium progressive is built around. Then ask for Nikon Ultimate Z if you want a Premium Platinum lens within 3 to 5 days, or ask for Tokai Neuroselect 9X if you can wait 10 to 12 days. Both come with a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
