Humidity, sweat and sunscreen: seven lens care habits for Philippine weather

Humidity, sweat and sunscreen: seven lens care habits for Philippine weather

Glasses live a hard life here. Heat, humidity, sweat, sunscreen, rain, dust from the road, and a shirt hem that gets used as a cleaning cloth ten times a day. Most lens damage comes from small habits repeated daily. Here are seven that make the biggest difference.

1. Stop wiping dry lenses

Dust and grit sit on the surface of a dry lens. Wiping them across the lens is how fine scratches start. Rinse the lens with lukewarm water first, or use lens spray, then wipe.

2. Use a microfiber cloth, not your shirt

A clean microfiber cloth lifts oil without grinding grit into the lens. Shirts, tissues and paper towels have fibers that can scratch. Keep a cloth in your bag and wash it regularly with mild soap, because a dirty cloth just moves dirt around.

3. Wash with mild dish soap and water

When lenses are greasy from sweat or sunscreen, a drop of mild dish soap, lukewarm water, then a pat dry with a clean cloth does the job. Avoid hot water, which can stress lens coatings, and avoid harsh household cleaners.

4. Keep sunscreen and perfume off the lenses

Sunscreen, bug repellent, hair spray and perfume leave a film that is hard to clear. Apply them first, let them dry, then put on your glasses. If you get a smear, wash it off properly instead of rubbing it around.

5. Do not leave glasses in a hot car or on a motorbike seat

A closed car in the Philippine sun gets very hot. Heat can stress coatings and warp some frames. Keep your glasses with you or in a case somewhere cooler.

6. Use a case, every time

Most scratches happen in bags and pockets, not on your face. A hard case in your bag costs little and protects the lenses and the frame. Place glasses lens-up when you put them down.

7. Get regular professional cleaning and adjustment

Home cleaning cannot reach everything. Skin oils and grime collect around the nose pads, hinges and frame edges where lenses sit. Sweat and humidity loosen screws and bend frames over time. A professional ultrasonic clean and a quick adjustment bring both back to normal.

At Vision Express stores, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment are included with your glasses. Drop in whenever your pair feels dirty or loose. You do not need an appointment for a quick clean, and it costs nothing.

What about a lens built for humid days?

No lens is immune to smudges, but some are easier to live with than others. We steer humid-day wearers toward lenses with a surface designed for everyday wear and easier cleaning, which suits a day of sweat, heat and sunscreen. Ask the team which one suits your prescription.

A word on scratches

Scratches cannot be polished out of a lens. If your lens has deep scratches, or a coating that is peeling, it is time to replace it. Do not wait until it hurts your vision.

Book your Vision7 exam

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. If your glasses are scratched or hazy, the exam also tells us whether your prescription has changed, so you replace the lenses once, not twice. Then ask for Opulens Ultra 1.60 at the counter. It is in stock and ready in 20 minutes, and it is the lens we recommend for humid, sweaty days. If you spend long hours on screens as well, ask about Opulens Blue Light 1.56, which is ready in 1 to 2 days. Every pair comes with a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
