Gold-tier progressives side by side: Physio Extensee, Autograph III D, Master Z and Neuroselect 7X
You have decided you need progressive lenses. Now the lens menu shows three bands, Silver, Gold and Platinum, and each band lists a lens from more than one maker. Gold is the middle band, and it is where many first-time and returning wearers land. This guide puts the four Gold-tier lenses we carry next to each other so you can walk into your exam knowing what you are choosing between.
What the Gold band means
Progressive lenses fit distance, middle distance and near vision into one lens, with no visible line. The band tells you the level of design refinement. Silver is the entry band. Gold sits in the middle. Platinum is the top. Within each band, the maker also sits in a tier: Starter, Enhanced or Premium.
The Gold lenses on our menu are Essilor Varilux Start and Shamir Opulens Apex Pro (Starter), Essilor Varilux Physio Extensee and Shamir Autograph III D (Enhanced), and Nikon Master Z and Tokai Neuroselect 7X (Premium). This article covers the four from Enhanced and Premium, since those are the ones people most often compare.
The four lenses
- Essilor Varilux Physio Extensee (France): the lens we point to for presbyopia after 40. Lead time is 3 to 5 days.
- Shamir Autograph III D (Israel): a custom-made design from the Autograph range. Lead time is 7 to 9 days.
- Nikon Master Z (Japan): Nikon's Premium Gold lens. Lead time is 3 to 5 days.
- Tokai Neuroselect 7X (Japan): Tokai's Premium Gold lens. Lead time is 10 to 12 days.
We are not going to tell you one of these is simply better. Each maker designs its lenses around different priorities, and what suits a teacher who reads all day will not suit someone who drives for a living. The exam decides it.
How to choose between them
Start with how you live, not the brand name. Ask yourself four things.
How soon do you need them? If you are on a deadline, the 3 to 5 day lenses from France and Japan (Varilux Physio Extensee and Nikon Master Z) fit better than the 10 to 12 day lens. Plan around lead times, especially before a trip or a busy season.
Is this your first progressive? Adaptation takes a few days to a couple of weeks for most people. Tell your optometrist if you are new, so the choice and the fitting account for it.
What is your day made of? Long hours at a desk, driving in Metro Manila traffic, reading small print, or a mix. Your optometrist will ask, and the answer changes the recommendation.
Do you want sun protection built in? Photochromic and polarized options exist for custom-made progressives. Ask the team what can be ordered for the lens you choose.
Why fitting matters as much as the lens
A progressive only works when the lens is positioned correctly in front of your pupil. A good design set badly will feel worse than a simpler design set well. That is why measurements are taken carefully at the counter, and why free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment is part of what you get with us. If something feels off in the first two weeks, come back. Adjusting the frame is often the whole fix.
Our take
All four lenses are serious options. The right one depends on your prescription, your frame, your timeline and your daily tasks. Anyone who recommends a Gold-tier lens without an exam is guessing.
Book your Vision7 exam
Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. Our licensed optometrists run the seven-step exam, from case history to diagnosis and management, so the lens recommendation comes from your actual prescription and how your eyes work together. Then ask for Essilor Varilux Physio Extensee at the counter if you want a Gold-tier lens designed around presbyopia and made in France, with a 3 to 5 day lead time. If your exam suggests you need the widest comfortable zones for screen work, ask about Shamir Autograph Intelligence as a step up. Every pair comes with a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
