Essilor Varilux Liberty and Opulens Pro Max: entry into Platinum-tier progressives

Essilor Varilux Liberty and Opulens Pro Max: entry into Platinum-tier progressives

Platinum is the top band on our progressive lens menu, and most patients assume that means the most expensive tier across the board with no lower entry point. That is not quite right. Within Platinum, there is a starter level built specifically to bring the benefits of the top tier — the widest, most stable fields of vision — within reach without jumping straight to the most premium named lenses in the band. Two options sit at that starter level: Essilor Varilux Liberty and Hong Kong Opulens Pro Max.

Why Platinum exists as a separate band at all

Silver and Gold progressives correct presbyopia well, but the width and stability of the intermediate and near zones narrows as you move down the bands. Platinum is built around maximizing that field — less need to move your head to find the right zone, a more natural experience switching between a laptop, a phone, and a face across the table. It is the band we recommend most often for patients whose day genuinely demands fast, frequent distance-switching, or for long-time progressive wearers who have simply outgrown what a lower band offers.

Essilor Varilux Liberty: the French starting point

Varilux Liberty is Essilor's entry into the Platinum band, made in France on the standard 3 to 5 day lead time. It carries Varilux's core progressive design philosophy — the same lineage that produces Varilux Comfort Max and Varilux XR — scaled to a starter Platinum price point. For a patient moving up from Essilor's Enhanced tier, Liberty is a natural next step: a noticeably wider field than Comfort Max, without stepping all the way to XR's price point.

Opulens Pro Max: a different origin, a different lead time

Hong Kong Opulens Pro Max sits at the same Platinum-starter level but comes from a different manufacturing line, with a 10 to 12 day production window — closer to Tokai's timeline than to Essilor's. Patients choose Pro Max for the same reason they choose Liberty — a starter entry into Platinum-band performance — but the honest tradeoff is the longer wait. If you need your new pair sooner rather than later and both options are otherwise comparable for your prescription, that lead-time difference is worth weighing on its own.

How this compares to the Enhanced and Premium Platinum tiers

Above the starter level, Platinum includes Shamir Autograph Intelligence, Essilor Varilux XR, and the top Nikon and Tokai progressive lines, all built for the most demanding daily use cases — heavy desk work, frequent long-distance driving, patients who have already tried a lower Platinum tier and want an even wider field. Liberty and Pro Max are not a lesser version of that experience; they are where most patients new to the Platinum band should actually start, since the difference between starter and premium Platinum is real but incremental, while the difference between Gold and Platinum starter is usually the one patients notice most.

Who should skip straight past the starter level

If you have already worn a Platinum-tier lens before and know specifically what you are missing — a wider intermediate zone at a dual-monitor desk, for instance — it is reasonable to go straight to Autograph Intelligence or Varilux XR rather than starting at Liberty or Pro Max and upgrading again later. The starter level exists mainly for patients moving into Platinum for the first time, where the jump from Gold is already the significant change.

Confirm the right entry point with an exam

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store, and during the subjective refraction and fitting steps, tell the optometrist specifically how your near and intermediate vision needs have changed recently — that is the real input for whether Platinum starter is the right move, rather than jumping tiers based on price alone. Ask for Essilor Varilux Liberty at the counter if you want the shorter Essilor lead time, or Opulens Pro Max if origin matters less to you than getting into the Platinum band at this price point. Both carry a 1-year warranty and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment, so the fit stays right as your prescription and your frame both settle in.
