Do polarized lenses make phone and dashboard screens look dim or black?

Do polarized lenses make phone and dashboard screens look dim or black?

You buy a pair of polarized sunglasses for your daily drive on EDSA or SLEX. The glare off the wet road is gone. Then you glance at the Waze screen on your phone mount and it looks dim, or nearly black. You tilt your head and it comes back. Nothing is broken. This is how polarization works.

Why it happens

Light is a wave that can vibrate in many directions. A polarized lens carries a filter that only lets light through in one direction, usually vertical. Glare bouncing off a flat surface such as a wet road, a car hood or the sea is mostly horizontal, so the filter blocks much of it. That is the benefit.

Many LCD screens, including some phones, car infotainment panels and ATM displays, also emit light in a single direction. If the direction of the screen's light is crossed with the filter in your lens, the screen looks dim or black. Rotate either one by about 90 degrees and the image returns. Different screens behave differently, and not every screen is affected.

What you will notice in daily use

  • Phone held in portrait. The screen may look normal in one orientation and darker when you turn the phone sideways.
  • Dashboard displays. Some digital instrument clusters and touchscreens look uneven or dim, and others look fine.
  • Tablet and laptop screens. The effect depends on the panel and the angle of your head.
  • Head tilt. Tilting your head makes the effect stronger or weaker, which is the quickest way to confirm what you are seeing.

Is it a reason to avoid polarized lenses?

For most drivers and riders who spend long hours on bright roads, polarized lenses reduce the squint-inducing glare that comes off wet asphalt after a Manila downpour and the shine off the hoods of cars ahead. The screen effect is a trade-off, not a defect. Whether it bothers you depends on the phone, the dashboard and how often you check them.

Two practical habits help. First, test with your own phone at the counter before you decide. Hold it in the orientation you use in the car and tilt your head. Second, if your car display goes dark, adjusting the angle of the mount a little often fixes it. If it still does not work for you, you can choose a non-polarized sun lens for days when screen reading matters most.

What polarization does not do

A polarized lens is not a stronger UV filter by itself and it does not replace a proper eye exam. It also does not make a lens impact-resistant. If you ride a motorcycle or play sport, ask the team about the toughest material for your frame. We do not name a product for that yet, and we would rather tell you so than guess.

Prescription polarized lenses

If you wear a prescription, polarization is something you order on top of the lens that corrects your vision. For single vision, the lens to ask about is Shamir Opulens Exact, ordered polarized. For progressives, any custom-made progressive can be ordered polarized, including the Shamir Autograph range and Essilor Varilux XR, and the Nikon and Tokai premium tiers. Lead times depend on the brand. Shamir lenses are made in Israel and take 7 to 9 days.

Check your own screens first

Before you order, bring the screens you actually look at. Your phone, your car's display and your smartwatch all behave differently. If a sample lens is available at the counter, test it against all three. It takes two minutes and avoids a surprise on the drive home.

Book your Vision7 exam

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam gives you an accurate prescription, including astigmatism, which matters because glare and blur on the road often come from an out-of-date grade. Then ask for Shamir Opulens Exact in polarized. It is made to measurement, so your cylinder and axis are cut precisely, and you get glare control on top. Every pair carries a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
