Can lens scratches be removed? What can and cannot be fixed

Short answer: no. A scratch on a spectacle lens cannot be repaired, and every home remedy you have seen recommended will make the lens worse rather than better.

That is worth explaining properly, because the reason tells you how to avoid the next one.

Why a scratch is permanent

A modern spectacle lens is not a bare piece of plastic. It is a lens body with thin functional layers bonded to the surface: a hard coat for scratch resistance, then an anti-reflective stack, then usually a water and oil repellent top layer. These layers are measured in nanometres.

A scratch cuts through them. To remove it you would have to abrade the whole surface down below the depth of the deepest scratch, which destroys every coating on it and changes the curve of the optical surface. You would end up with a lens that is hazy, glare-prone and no longer the right power. There is nothing to polish back.

This is exactly why the internet advice fails. Toothpaste is a mild abrasive, which means it sands the coating. Baking soda is worse. Car polish and wax smear and cloud. Any of them will turn one visible scratch into a dull, scattered mess across the whole lens.

What a scratch actually does to your vision

A scratch scatters light rather than blocking it. In daylight you may not notice. At night, when you are driving and there is a bright headlight or a streetlamp in your field of view, that scatter becomes a starburst or a haze exactly where you need clarity. People often blame worsening night vision on their eyes when the cause is sitting on the lens surface.

Why lenses scratch faster here

• Dust and grit. Roadside dust, construction and open-air commutes leave fine abrasive particles on the lens. Wiping a dusty lens drags that grit across the surface. This single habit causes most scratches.
• Heat and sweat. Salt and sebum build up fast in Philippine humidity. People wipe more often, and more often means more risk.
• Tissue paper and shirt hems. Tissue is wood fibre and is surprisingly rough. A shirt tail has whatever was on the shirt.
• Face-down on a table. Setting glasses lens-down on any hard surface is the most reliable way to put a deep scratch on the front.

How to not scratch the next pair

• Rinse first, always. Run the lens under cool water before any cloth touches it. This floats the grit off instead of grinding it in. If you do one thing from this article, do this one.
• Use a drop of plain dish soap on your fingertips for oils, rinse, then dry with a clean microfibre cloth.
• Wash the microfibre cloth regularly. A cloth full of trapped grit is a piece of sandpaper.
• Store them in a hard case. In a bag without one, keys and a case-less pair will find each other.
• Never put them face-down. Fold them and set them on the temples, or better, in the case.
• Do not leave them on a car dashboard. Heat can craze coatings and warp frames.
