Blue light lenses for students: what parents should know before online classes and mobile games

Blue light lenses for students: what parents should know before online classes and mobile games

Your child studies on a laptop, submits homework on a tablet and unwinds with mobile games. Screen time is part of school life now, and many Filipino parents ask the same question at the optical counter: should my child wear blue light glasses?

The honest answer is that it depends on the child, and that a blue light lens is a comfort option. It is not a treatment and it does not protect against eye disease. Here is how to think about it.

What blue light lenses can and cannot do

A blue light lens filters part of the blue-violet light coming off screens. Some people find this more comfortable during long sessions. That is the whole claim. We do not say these lenses prevent eye disease, and we do not say they fix myopia.

Eye strain during screen work is largely driven by two things: we blink less when we concentrate, and our eyes hold a close focus for long stretches. Blue light is one factor among several. A lens cannot replace breaks.

Start with the eye exam, not the lens

A child who squints at the screen, sits very close to it, rubs their eyes or complains of headaches may have an uncorrected prescription. No filter will fix that. A child whose grade has changed also needs new lenses regardless of screens.

This is why the first step is a Vision7 exam. If the prescription is right and the child is still uncomfortable after long sessions, a blue light lens is a reasonable thing to try.

Five screen habits that help more than any lens

  • Take a break every 20 minutes. Look at something about 6 metres away for 20 seconds.
  • Blink on purpose. Kids stare at games and forget. Remind them to blink fully.
  • Watch the distance. A laptop at arm's length is easier on the eyes than a phone held close to the face.
  • Light the room. A dark room with a bright screen is harder on the eyes than a lit room.
  • Send them outside. Time outdoors is good for children's eyes, and it gets them away from the screen.

Which blue light lens fits which child

The Vision Express lens mat lists two blue light lenses that suit students, both on Express service:

  • Opulens Advanced 1.60 is kept in stock and can be ready in 20 minutes. The lens mat names it as the everyday pair for a child, which makes it useful when a pair is needed quickly, for example before exams.
  • Opulens Blue Light 1.56 is ready in 1 to 2 days and is the lens the mat points to for screen fatigue.

If your child has a strong prescription, ask the team about lens thickness and which lens suits the grade. Do not assume the same lens works for every prescription.

If your child is myopic and the grade keeps climbing

A blue light lens does not slow myopia progression. If your child's grade is climbing year after year, tell the optometrist. Myopia control lenses such as Hoya MiYOSMART, Essilor Stellest and Shamir Optimee are designed to slow progression, and choosing one is a clinical decision made with the optometrist after an exam. We do not quote percentages, because results differ between studies and between children.

What about sports and rough play?

Children drop and bend glasses. Ask the team about the toughest lens material available for your child's frame. We do not name a product for this until we can confirm it, so ask in store and get a direct answer.

How often should students be checked?

Once a year is a sensible default, and sooner if you notice squinting, headaches, sitting close to the TV, or a drop in school performance that could be a vision problem. Children often do not say that they cannot see well. They assume everyone sees the way they do.

Book your Vision7 exam

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam checks acuity, refraction, how the eyes work together and eye health, so you know whether your child needs glasses, a prescription update or nothing at all. If a screen lens is right, ask for Opulens Advanced 1.60 for a same-day pair, or Opulens Blue Light 1.56 if a day or two is fine.

Every pair comes with a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
