"Bespoke lenses": a six-point checklist to verify what it means in any optical store
Every optical store says it. Custom lenses. Tailored lenses. Bespoke lenses. The words are cheap. What is behind them is what matters. This guide does not ask you to take our word for anything. It gives you six things to check, in any store, so you can see for yourself whether a lens is actually matched to you.
1. A licensed optometrist did your exam
A lens can only be matched to your eyes if someone qualified measured them. Ask who performed the exam and whether they are a licensed optometrist. At Vision Express, the exam is the Vision7: case history, visual acuity, objective refraction, subjective refraction, binocular eye exam, visual health exam, and diagnosis and management. Ask any store what its exam includes, step by step.
2. Your prescription was refined with you, not only by a machine
Machine readings are a starting point. Subjective refraction, where the optometrist asks "better one or two?", fine-tunes the prescription with your feedback. If an exam skips that step, the prescription is less personal than it sounds.
3. Your lifestyle was part of the conversation
A lens for a night-shift worker, a teacher, a rider and a retiree should not all be the same. A good consultation includes questions about your work, screens, driving, sport and hobbies. If nobody asks, nobody is matching.
4. The lens is named, and you can ask for it by name
You should leave knowing the exact name of your lens, its maker, and where it is made. Vague labels like "high quality" or "premium" are not names. Our lens menu lists each lens by name, maker, tier and lead time, so you can compare before you decide.
5. Measurements are taken for your frame
Your pupil distance and the height of the lens position in the frame matter, especially for progressives. Ask whether measurements are taken on your actual frame, and whether the lens is made to those measurements. Made-to-measure lenses use them. A stock lens cut to shape does not use them in the same way.
6. The service continues after you pay
A lens is only as good as its fit on your face over time. Check what happens afterwards: warranty length, whether adjustments are free, whether cleaning is included. Our promises are in writing: a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
How to use the checklist
Take it to any store, ours included. If a store answers all six clearly, that is a good sign. If it dodges two or three, ask why. You are spending real money on something you wear every waking hour, so asking questions is reasonable.
We would rather you ask and trust us than assume and be disappointed. We are also growing toward 60 stores nationwide, and the standard has to be the same in each one. The checklist keeps us honest.
Book your Vision7 exam
Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. Run the checklist while you are there: ask who the optometrist is, watch the seven steps, and ask for your lens by name. Then ask for Shamir Opulens Exact at the counter. It is made to measurement from your prescription, so it is the clearest example on our menu of a lens built around your exam results. Lead time is 7 to 9 days. Every pair comes with a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
