Architect, interior designer and artist Carlo Calma shares how eyewear can define an individual

Eyewear is sometimes perceived as an afterthought, especially for those who wear it so frequently that it becomes an extension of themselves. They are icons of our identity; loud, fun, serious and sophisticated all in equal measure. Those with a discerning eye recognise the deeper significance of those frames resting on the bridges of our nose. One such individual is Carlo Calma, an architect whose impressive portfolio is not limited to head-turning structures but also present in art and interior design.

Calma took an active role in a photoshoot with Tatler Philippines, striking bold and avant-garde poses that captivated the room. His whimsical nature exploded through every layout. He moved with such freedom and playfulness, the team could hardly contain their smiles. Clearly, he is a creative to his core–his fashion a direct reflection of his beautifully chaotic brain, bubbling with ideas and emotion.

In fact, he handpicked his wardrobe, in all its eclectic, unabashed glory. From textured suits, to chunky shoes, sheer fabrics and a pleated skirt, each look was delightfully striking and each paired with a gorgeous pair of frames or shades. Indeed, there are precious few words that could do him justice; he carries himself with such self-assurance, confidence and genuine joy that it is awfully contagious.

Growing up surrounded by a family of architects, he has developed an almost uncanny instinct for creativity. “Your eyes and taste become more discerning, and you develop your own sense of style and ability to think critically,” he says of his upbringing. “A good designer should be decisive.”

Provocative and unexpected are words that easily describe Calma’s work across architecture and art, often blurring the line between the two. This easily seeps into his choice of eyewear with Vision Express. “I like glasses that have quirky elements or architectural details,” he explains, the latter a direct nod to his work. This, in addition to his preference for wooden frames, also reflects his appreciation for raw materials, intricate lines and texture, which form the metaphorical cornerstone of his sense of style. His personal collection of eyewear indeed is a treasure trove of items that are angular and architectural, all with unique, head-turning design features.

“I think of my dad’s eyeglasses collection—he loves round glasses similar to the architect I.M. Pei,” he recalls of his father.

His favoured item is a pair of mirrorised sunglasses, his faithful companion whenever he finds himself travelling across the world or relaxing by the beach. “I find it the most versatile, and it can match any outfit,” he enthuses. Vision Express boasts a wide array of the very silhouettes and firm architectural style that he appreciates. Furthermore, with the glaring sun and sweltering heat more relevant today than ever, he also values the utility it provides. He emphasises, “It’s also reflective, so it becomes a kind of armour.”

Calma’s presence and signature is unmistakable, recognisable in both talent and discipline. While he hails from a family of impressive designers, he has already forged an identity that is distinct and assertive, expressed through his very being. Buildings, art pieces—and yes, even a pair of shades—all as bold, striking and dynamic as he is.
