Why your progressives fight you at a desk, and what office lenses do differently
You got progressives. Distance is sharp, reading a menu is fine, and you were told the adjustment period would pass. It did. But eight hours at a desk still leaves your neck stiff and your shoulders tight, and you have caught yourself lifting your chin to find the sweet spot on your monitor.
Nothing is wrong with your glasses. You are asking a lens designed for the world to do a job it was not designed for.
How a progressive lens is laid out
A progressive lens changes power gradually from top to bottom:
- Top: distance vision. The largest, widest zone, because that is where most of life happens.
- Middle: intermediate vision, roughly arm's length. A narrow corridor.
- Bottom: near vision, for reading. Wide enough for a book held low.
The zones on either side of the near and intermediate corridors carry unavoidable soft focus. That is physics, not a manufacturing shortcut — the power has to transition somewhere.
Why a monitor sits in the worst place
Your screen is around 50 to 70 centimetres away. That is intermediate distance, so it falls squarely in the narrowest part of the lens — a corridor, not a field.
Two consequences follow. You lift your chin to bring that corridor up onto the screen, holding your head at an angle for hours. And you swing your head side to side to move the narrow clear zone across a wide monitor, because turning your eyes alone takes you into the soft edges.
Add a second monitor, or a document flat on the desk beside the screen, and it gets worse. The stiff neck and the aching shoulders are the result.
Not all progressives are equally bad at this
The width of that intermediate corridor is the main thing separating a basic progressive from a premium one. Higher-tier designs are calculated more precisely and use more of the lens surface for usable vision, which produces a noticeably wider screen zone and less head-swinging.
If your current progressives are an entry-level design and you spend your working life at a desk, moving up a tier solves a large part of the problem on its own — before you consider a second pair.
What dedicated office lenses do
Office lenses — also called occupational or indoor lenses — flip the priorities. Instead of dedicating the top of the lens to far distance, they dedicate the whole lens to the range you work in, roughly from arm's length to reading distance.
Because the design no longer has to fit distance vision in, the intermediate and near zones become dramatically wider. You look straight ahead at your monitor through a clear, generous field. You drop your eyes slightly to read a document. Your chin stays where it belongs.
The trade is honest and worth stating plainly: office lenses are not for driving. Distance beyond a few metres is soft. They are a second pair, for the desk, and you switch back to your regular progressives when you leave.

Fix the desk too
Lenses solve the optics. These solve the rest:
- Lower your monitor. Standard advice puts the top of the screen at eye level. If you wear any kind of multifocal, go lower — it lets your eyes drop instead of your chin lifting.
- Push the screen back. An arm's length, minimum. Closer screens demand more focusing effort.
- Take breaks. Every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 6 metres away for about 20 seconds. It gives the focusing muscle a rest, which is where a large share of end-of-day eye fatigue comes from.
