Why do my glasses fog up, and how do I stop it?

Why do my glasses fog up, and how do I stop it?

You step out of an air-conditioned mall into the afternoon heat and your lenses turn white. You take a sip of hot coffee and lose half your vision. You pull off a helmet after a ride and everything goes soft. Fogging is one of the most common complaints we hear across our stores, and almost nobody who complains about it has a defective pair of glasses.

Fogging is physics. Understanding the physics is what lets you manage it.

What is actually happening on your lens

Air holds water vapour. Warm air holds more of it than cool air. When humid air touches a surface that is cooler than the air's dew point, the vapour condenses into thousands of tiny droplets. Those droplets scatter light in every direction, which is why fog looks white rather than wet.

Your lens is the cool surface. In the Philippines, the temperature gap that causes this is everywhere. A mall interior sits around 22 to 24 degrees. Outdoors, it is frequently 32 degrees with relative humidity above 75 percent. Walk from one to the other and your lenses have no chance.

Three situations account for most fogging complaints we hear:

  • Aircon to outdoors. The biggest one. Your lenses are chilled, the outside air is loaded with moisture.
  • Hot food and drink. Rising steam from soup, coffee or a fresh pan de sal hits the lens from below.
  • Trapped body heat. Helmets, face masks and high collars redirect warm, humid breath straight up onto the lens.

What actually reduces fogging

There is no lens on earth that cannot fog under the right conditions. What you can do is shorten how long it lasts and how often it happens.

  • Give your lenses a head start. Before you leave an air-conditioned space, slide your glasses down your nose or take them off for 30 seconds. Letting them warm gradually is far more effective than wiping fog away repeatedly.
  • Improve airflow at the top of the frame. A frame that sits slightly further from your face, or nose pads adjusted to lift the lens a millimetre or two, lets warm air escape instead of pooling. This is a fitting adjustment, not a purchase.
  • Redirect your breath. With a mask, seal the bridge of the nose properly so exhaled air exits at the sides. A loose top edge is a fog machine.
  • Use anti-fog products correctly. Anti-fog sprays and wipes work by lowering surface tension so water spreads into a thin, transparent film instead of beading. They are temporary, they need reapplying, and they must be rated safe for coated lenses. Ask the store team which product is safe for your specific lens.
  • Never wipe a fogged lens with your shirt. Warm humid conditions mean airborne dust is already sitting on that lens. Dry-wiping grinds it in. This is how most coating scratches actually begin.

What does not work

Soap films, toothpaste and shaving cream circulate online as home anti-fog fixes. On a modern multi-coated lens, they risk damaging the coating layer, and the damage is not repairable. A scratched anti-reflective coating scatters light permanently, which is a far worse outcome than 20 seconds of fog.

Heating a lens with a hairdryer or leaving glasses on a car dashboard is worse still. Sustained heat warps frames and can stress lens coatings.

When fogging is not the real problem

Some people describe persistent haze that never clears. If your vision looks smoky or filmy even when the lens is dry and clean, that is not fogging. It could be a degraded coating, a residue build-up, or a change in the eye itself. Clouding of vision that does not resolve with a clean lens deserves a proper eye examination rather than a new bottle of spray.

Bring the glasses in. Free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning will tell you within minutes whether the haze is on the lens or behind it.

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store

Our seven-step comprehensive eye exam separates a lens problem from an eye problem. It checks your visual acuity, refines your prescription, and includes a visual health exam, so persistent haze gets a real answer instead of a guess.

If humidity, sweat and smudging are your daily reality, ask for Opulens Ultra 1.60 at the counter. It is our hardest-working everyday lens for Philippine conditions, and its smooth surface means water and oil are easier to clear and easier to keep clear, which is exactly what you want when you are moving between aircon and heat all day. It is in stock, so your glasses are ready in 20 minutes.

If most of your day is spent on screens, Opulens Blue Light 1.56 is the step across for the same everyday durability with screen comfort added.

Every pair comes with free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment, and a 1-year warranty. Bring your glasses in any time for a fit check. Small adjustments to how a frame sits are often the cheapest fogging fix there is.
