What frame shape suits your face? A practical guide

Most people pick a frame because they saw it on someone else. Then it sits in a drawer. The frames you actually wear every day are the ones that balance your face and fit your head properly — and those are two different things.

Here is how to work through both, in the order that matters.

Find your face shape in thirty seconds

Stand in front of a mirror in good light. Look at three things: the width of your forehead, the width of your cheekbones, and the line of your jaw. Then ask whether your face is longer than it is wide, or close to equal.

• Round — soft jawline, cheeks the widest point, length and width similar.
• Square — strong jaw, forehead and jaw close in width.
• Oval — slightly longer than wide, gently curved jaw.
• Heart — wider forehead and cheekbones, narrower chin.
• Oblong — noticeably longer than wide.

Nobody is a perfect category. Most Filipino faces sit somewhere between round and oval, with a lower nose bridge and higher cheekbones than the faces most imported frames are designed around. That last detail matters more than the shape, and we will come back to it.

The balance rule

Frames work by contrast. Angular frames sharpen a soft face. Rounded frames soften a strong one. That is the whole principle.

• Round face — rectangles, squares and browline frames add definition. Keep the frame slightly wider than your cheekbones so it draws the eye outward.
• Square face — round, oval and thin metal frames soften a strong jaw. Avoid heavy, boxy frames that repeat the same lines.
• Oval face — almost anything works. Match the frame depth to your face so the glasses do not look small.
• Heart face — lighter frames at the top, wider at the bottom. Rimless and bottom-heavy shapes balance a wider forehead.
• Oblong face — deeper frames with a strong brow line break up the length. Avoid narrow, shallow shapes.

Fit beats shape, every time

A frame in the right shape that fits badly will annoy you by lunchtime. Four checks:

• Width. The frame front should sit within a few millimetres of your face width. If the arms flare outward at the hinge, the frame is too narrow.
• Bridge. This is the one most people get wrong. A lower nose bridge needs adjustable nose pads or a frame cut with an Asian fit bridge. Without it, the frame slides down all day and leaves marks.
• Temples. The arms should follow the side of your head and bend just past the ear, not press into it.
• Brow line. The top of the frame should sit near your eyebrow, not cut across it.

Your prescription is part of the style decision

A strong minus grade thickens the lens at the edges. A large, wide frame makes that thickness more visible and adds weight to the front. If your grade is strong, a smaller frame with a rounder shape will look and feel better — and a thinner lens material does the rest of the work.

The reverse also applies. Progressive lenses need enough vertical depth to hold the reading zone. Very shallow, narrow frames cut the bottom off that corridor. If you wear progressives, bring that up before you fall in love with a shape.

What to do about humidity

Manila heat is a fit problem as much as a comfort one. Sweat plus a smooth acetate bridge equals a frame that walks down your nose.
