What do the numbers inside your glasses mean?

Take off your glasses and look at the inside of the arm, the part that runs toward your ear. You will find something like 52 ☐ 18 140, sometimes with a model name and a colour code.

Those three numbers are your frame size in millimetres. If a pair has ever felt perfect and you could not work out why, this is the answer, and it is the most useful thing on your glasses that almost nobody reads.

The three measurements, in order

52 is the lens width. The horizontal width of one lens at its widest point. Bigger numbers mean bigger lenses. This is the number that decides whether a frame looks proportionate on your face or slightly borrowed from someone else's.

18 is the bridge width. The gap between the two lenses, sitting over your nose. This is the number most people get wrong. Too wide and the frame slides down all day. Too narrow and it pinches and leaves marks.

140 is the temple length. The full length of the arm from hinge to tip, including the curve that goes behind your ear. Too short and it presses on the side of your head. Too long and there is nothing anchoring the frame.

The small square symbol between the first two numbers is a standards mark, not a measurement. Ignore it.

Why the bridge number matters most in the Philippines

Many global frame ranges are built around a higher nose bridge than a lot of Filipino faces have. If your glasses slide down constantly, sit low enough that you look over the top of them, or leave your lashes brushing the lens, the bridge measurement is usually the culprit, not the lens size.

Two frames with identical lens widths can fit completely differently because one has an 18mm bridge and the other has 16mm. When you know your number, you stop wasting time on frames that were never going to work.

Heat and humidity make a poor bridge fit worse. Sweat and skin oil reduce grip, so a frame that only just holds position in the morning is on your nose tip by lunch.

How to use your numbers

• Write them down. Photograph the inside of the arm on your best-fitting pair. That is your baseline.
• Stay within about 2mm. Small deviations are usually fine. Beyond that, the fit noticeably changes.
• Do not treat lens width as a style number alone. A wider lens also moves the optical centre outward, which matters for your prescription.
• Remember the numbers describe the frame, not your face. Nose pad style, frame curvature and material all change how the same numbers feel.

What the numbers cannot tell you

Frame size is not the same as your pupillary distance, the gap between the centres of your pupils. Frame size describes the frame; pupillary distance describes you. Both are needed to position your lenses correctly, and the second one has to be measured by someone, not read off a label.

This is where a strong prescription becomes unforgiving. The further your eye sits from the optical centre of the lens, the more distortion you notice at the edges. A frame that is technically your size but sitting badly on your face will still feel wrong.

So the numbers are a shortlisting tool. They get you to the right five frames faster. The final call is made in front of a mirror with someone measuring.
