Wearing contact lenses on a long flight: a guide for OFWs and travellers

Manila to Dubai is about nine hours. Manila to Toronto with a stop can run past twenty-four. If you wear contact lenses, that stretch of time is the least forgiving environment your eyes will meet all year.

Why cabin air is the problem

Aircraft cabins are pressurised with air drawn from outside at altitude, where there is almost no moisture. Relative humidity in a cabin typically sits far below what you experience on the ground, often lower than a desert. Combine that with an overhead air vent blowing directly at your face and a tear film that is already evaporating faster than normal, and a soft contact lens dries out.

A dried lens grips the eye surface. It feels gritty, then sore, then genuinely painful. Removing it at that point risks irritating the cornea. This is the specific sequence that ruins the first day of a trip.

Two things make it worse. Long-haul flights are usually overnight, and closing your eyes to sleep in contact lenses reduces oxygen to the cornea. Alcohol and coffee, both easy to reach for on a plane, add to dehydration.

The simple answer

Wear your glasses on the plane. Put the lenses in after you land, in a proper bathroom, with clean hands.

This is what most eye care professionals do themselves. It is not a compromise; it is the comfortable option. If your flight is over about four hours, the glasses win every time.

If you are going to wear them anyway

• Bring your glasses regardless. Non-negotiable. If the lenses have to come out mid-flight, you need to be able to see.
• Use daily disposables for the flight if you have them. Fresh out, thrown away, no case hygiene to manage in a cramped lavatory.
• Pack preservative-free lubricating drops in hand luggage. Check the liquid rules for your route, but small eye drops are normally permitted. Never put the bottle in checked baggage where you cannot reach it.
• Close the overhead vent or angle it away from your face. That single jet of dry air does most of the damage.
• Take them out before you sleep unless the lenses have been specifically prescribed for overnight wear. Most have not.
• Carry solution and a case in hand luggage, in a sealed bag within the liquid allowance.
• Drink water, go easy on alcohol and coffee.
• Never rinse a lens with tap water or bottled water. This matters more abroad than at home. Waterborne organisms cause serious corneal infections. Solution only.

For OFWs heading out on a long contract

Get your eye test done before you fly, not when you are home again in two years. Take a printed copy of your prescription and your lens specification with you, because brands, parameters and availability differ by country and you may need to match them.

Carry a spare pair of glasses. Losing your only pair in a city where you do not yet know where to go is a bad week.

If your destination is much colder, much drier, or much dustier than the Philippines, expect your eyes to behave differently for the first few weeks. Central heating in winter is as drying as a plane cabin, just for longer.
