Varilux Physio Extensee or Autograph III D: choosing an Enhanced Gold progressive

Varilux Physio Extensee or Autograph III D: choosing an Enhanced Gold progressive

The Gold band is the middle of the Vision Express progressive menu. In the Enhanced tier, two lenses sit together: Essilor Varilux Physio Extensee from France and Shamir Autograph III D from Israel. If your optometrist has moved you past the Silver band, or you want more than a starter lens, this is the pair to understand.

Where Gold sits on the menu

Progressives are sorted by band (Silver, Gold, Platinum) and by tier (Starter, Enhanced, Premium). Gold Starter lenses are Essilor Varilux Start and Shamir Opulens Apex Pro. Gold Premium lenses are Nikon Master Z and Tokai Neuroselect 7X. The two lenses in this article are the Enhanced step in the middle.

The menu does not print index, thickness or coating differences between lenses, so we will not claim one is thinner or crisper. What we can compare honestly is origin, lead time, who the lens is named for, and how the offer works.

Essilor Varilux Physio Extensee

  • Origin: France.
  • Lead time: 3 to 5 days.
  • Who it suits: this is the lens our team names for presbyopia after 40. If you are newly reading with the phone at arm's length and want a dependable all-day progressive, start the conversation here.
  • Offer note: Essilor lines generally carry a second pair at 50% off. Confirm the current offer in store.

Shamir Autograph III D

  • Origin: Israel.
  • Lead time: 7 to 9 days.
  • Who it suits: wearers who want the Shamir Autograph family at the Gold level, with the lens made to their measurements.
  • Offer note: Shamir lines generally carry Buy 1 Get 1. Confirm the current offer in store.

The practical differences

  • Waiting time. Physio Extensee is usually ready in 3 to 5 days. Autograph III D takes 7 to 9. If your old glasses are broken or too weak, this decides a lot.
  • Offer structure. A second pair at 50% off or Buy 1 Get 1 changes the value of ordering a backup pair. Ask what applies on the day you order.
  • Fit with your day. Heavy laptop use, driving, reading on the couch and cooking in a bright kitchen all pull on different parts of a progressive. Tell your optometrist which ones fill your week.

A Philippine scenario

Consider an accountant in Makati who splits her day between a laptop, a phone and printed documents, then drives home along EDSA at dusk. She needs a lens that moves between all three distances without effort. The right answer for her may be the Gold band, or it may be a step up if she works on dual monitors. We do not guess from a profile. The optometrist measures first, then recommends.

What to expect in the first two weeks

Every progressive has an adaptation period. Your eyes learn to look through different parts of the lens for different distances. Most people notice that they need to turn their head more than they did with single vision, and that the edges of the lens feel unfamiliar at first. Wear the pair consistently rather than switching back to your old glasses, and come back for a free adjustment if the fit feels off. A frame that sits too low or too tilted makes any progressive feel wrong, and a quick adjustment often fixes it.

What the Vision7 exam adds

The seven steps include a subjective refraction and a binocular eye exam. Those are the two that matter most for progressives. The first fine-tunes your add power with your feedback. The second checks that your eyes work together at the distances you actually use. Skip either and a progressive can feel uncomfortable even when the prescription looks right on paper.

How to decide

If speed matters, Physio Extensee is ready sooner. If you want to stay inside the Shamir range, Autograph III D fits. If your work is mostly desk and screens, ask your optometrist whether a step up to the Platinum band is worth considering. The team will explain the options without pressure.

Book your Vision7 eye test

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam measures your add power and checks how your eyes work together, which a progressive needs to be cut correctly. Then ask for Essilor Varilux Physio Extensee at the counter for a France-made lens in 3 to 5 days, or Shamir Autograph III D if you prefer the Shamir range. Each pair includes free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning, free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment, and a 1-year warranty.
