How long is an eyeglass prescription valid?

You find the card in a drawer, dated two years ago, and you wonder whether you can just order lenses from it. It is a fair question, and the answer depends less on the date printed on it than on whose eyes it belongs to.

What a validity period actually means

An eyeglass prescription is a snapshot. It records what your eyes needed on the day they were measured. Nothing about it expires the way milk does — a lens made from an old card will still be made correctly. The risk is that it will be made correctly to a specification your eyes have moved past.

As a working rule, treat a prescription as reliable for about a year, and treat anything older than two years as a starting point for a conversation rather than an order form. Some optical practices will decline to dispense from a card past a certain age, and that is a sensible caution rather than an upsell.

How fast a grade actually drifts

It varies enormously by age, and this is the part that matters more than the calendar.

• Children and teenagers: fastest. A short-sighted child's grade can move meaningfully within a year, sometimes within months during a growth period. A year-old prescription for a ten-year-old is genuinely out of date.
• Twenties and thirties: usually the most stable stretch of life. A two-year-old card is often still close.
• Forties onward: the reading addition starts climbing. Distance may be steady while near vision changes underneath it, which is why people in this bracket feel fine at distance and increasingly stuck up close.
• Sixties and beyond: changes speed up again, and more of them are worth investigating rather than simply correcting.

The measurement your old card is missing

Even a perfectly current prescription is only half of what a lens needs. Your pupillary distance, and for progressives your fitting height, are measured against the specific frame on your face. A card from two years ago carries none of that for the frame you are about to buy. This is the most common reason a technically correct pair still feels wrong.

When the date does not matter at all

Throw the card out and book properly if any of these apply:

• You are squinting, or holding things further away than you used to
• Headaches after screen work that were not there last year
• New glare or halos around lights at night
• One eye clearly performing differently from the other
• You have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of glaucoma — in which case the exam is about far more than the numbers

Anything sudden is not a prescription question. Loss of vision in one eye, a shadow moving across your field of view, a shower of new floaters or flashes, or eye pain with redness needs an eye doctor the same day.

The honest arithmetic

Ordering from an old card feels like the efficient choice. Weigh it against the alternative: eighteen months of mild headaches, worse night driving and a pair you never quite reach for, in exchange for skipping one appointment. Prescriptions drift quietly, and the brain is very good at absorbing the difference without telling you.
