Glasses and the camera eyepiece: what photographers and videographers should know

Glasses and the camera eyepiece: what photographers and videographers should know

If you shoot for a living or for pleasure, you know the small frustration. You lift the camera, your glasses bump the eyepiece, and the frame edge cuts into the corner of the view. You take the glasses off, and now the image in the finder is soft. Photographers and videographers who wear glasses make small trade-offs every day. Some of them are avoidable.

Why the eyepiece and glasses clash

A viewfinder is designed to be viewed from a set distance behind the eyepiece. Glasses add distance between your eye and the finder, so the view can feel smaller and the corners can disappear. Thick frames and a strong prescription make the effect worse. Scratches on the outside of the lens also build up, because the eyepiece rubs the lens surface over a long day of shooting.

Practical fixes you can try

  • Check the diopter dial. Many cameras let you adjust the viewfinder to your own eyesight. If you shoot without glasses, set it to match your eyes.
  • Press the eyepiece close. A soft eyecup that sits against the frame can help you keep a steady position.
  • Choose a slimmer frame. A lighter, smaller frame leaves more room against the eyecup.
  • Protect the lens surface. Rinse dust before wiping and use a clean microfibre cloth, since wiping dry grit scratches lenses.
  • Carry a spare pair. A scratched or broken pair can ruin a shoot day.

Prescription precision matters more for shooters

Judging focus and sharpness depends on a prescription that is correct and current. Even a small error makes it harder to tell whether an image is in focus. This is a good reason to test your eyes every year rather than only when something feels wrong. The Vision7 eye test checks your acuity, objective and subjective refraction and binocular function, so the final prescription is tuned with your input.

If you have astigmatism, ask about lenses made to measurement. Shamir Opulens Exact is made in Israel with a 7 to 9 day lead time, and its cylinder and axis are cut precisely to your prescription.

Shooting in the Philippine sun

Location shoots mean long hours under strong sun, reflections off glass and water and moves between bright streets and dim interiors. A photochromic lens darkens outdoors and clears indoors. The menu offers Essilor Photochromic Elements White 1.56 and Essilor Transitions Classic HMC 1.56, both ready in 1 to 2 days.

One caution for people who judge colour and exposure by eye: a darkened photochromic lens changes how bright a scene looks. Do not make exposure or colour decisions through a darkened lens. Use your camera's histogram and monitor, and take a moment for the lens to clear before you assess an image.

If you are over 40

Working with a viewfinder, a rear screen and a laptop means three distances. If you are in your forties and finding the rear screen harder to read, ask about a progressive. A progressive can make the eyepiece and the camera screen trickier at first, since you need to hold your head in the right place to look through the right zone. If you shoot a lot, discuss a separate single vision pair for shooting with your optometrist, rather than guessing.

Long events and tired eyes

  • Rest your eyes between shots by looking at something far away
  • Blink fully, since concentrating on a finder reduces blinking
  • Keep your lenses clean, since smudges and sweat make bright lights flare

If glare and flare around bright lights are new for you, report them at your eye test, since an updated prescription may help.

Your next step

Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. The seven-step exam measures your prescription precisely and tells the optometrist how your eyes work together. Then ask for Shamir Opulens Exact if you have astigmatism or your grade has changed, and bring your camera so the optician can check your frame against the eyepiece. Every pair carries a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment.
