Buying glasses online or in store in the Philippines: what actually differs
You can order glasses from your phone during a commercial break. The frame arrives in three days, and it costs less than a mall visit. It is a fair question why anyone still walks into a store.
We sell both ways, so take this as an honest breakdown rather than a sales pitch. Some purchases are perfectly safe to make online. Others are not, and the reasons are specific.
What online genuinely does better
- Range. A website carries every colourway. A store carries what fits on the wall.
- Price transparency. Filtering and comparing is easier on a screen than under a salesperson's eye.
- Repeat orders. If you know your frame and your prescription has not changed, reordering online is the sensible move.
- Time. No mall, no parking, no queue.
Where online quietly falls down
Measurements. A prescription is not the whole story. Where your pupils sit relative to the lens decides whether the optical centre lands in front of your eye or slightly off it. Off by a few millimetres and you get pulling, headaches, and that vague sense that something is wrong you cannot name. Pupillary distance is the measurement most people get wrong when they self-report it, and progressive lenses need several more measurements on top of it.
Fit. Frame width, bridge width and temple length have to match your face. A frame that is 4mm too wide slides all day no matter how much you tighten it. Photos and virtual try-on show you colour and shape. They do not show you fit.
Verification. When your glasses arrive, someone should confirm that what was made matches what was prescribed. In store that happens at the counter. Online it happens when you notice something feels off, weeks later.
Adjustment. Every new pair needs the temples and nose pads set to your head. This is not optional finishing β it is what puts the lens at the right distance and angle from your eye. It takes two minutes with the right tools and cannot be done properly at home.
The prescription problem
The most common mistake is not choosing the wrong channel. It is using an old prescription. A slip from three years ago is a record of your eyes three years ago. Order from it and you get a well-made pair of the wrong glasses.
Online sellers will happily accept whatever you type in. Nobody checks. That is the part worth being deliberate about.
Progressives are the clear line
If you need progressive lenses, buy them in person. Progressives depend on fitting-height and frame-position measurements taken on your face, in the actual frame you have chosen. Get them wrong and the reading zone sits in the wrong place, which is why so many people say they "could never get used to progressives." Very often the lens was fine and the measurement was not.
A practical rule
- First pair ever? In store.
- Prescription changed? In store.
- Progressives, or a strong or complex prescription? In store.
- Kids? In store β fit is everything and children grow.
- Same frame, same prescription, second pair? Online is fine.
- Non-prescription sunglasses? Online is fine, as long as UV400 is stated.
What to check before you pay, either way
Is the prescription current? Is UV protection stated for sunwear? What is the returns policy if the lenses come back wrong? Who adjusts the frame afterwards, and what does that cost? Is there a warranty, and does it cover the lenses or only the frame?
That last pair of questions is where most cheap online purchases turn out to be less of a bargain than they looked.
Get measured once, buy confidently after
Book a Vision7 eye test at your nearest Vision Express store. You walk out with a current prescription and a full set of measurements β which makes every future purchase, ours or anyone else's, online or in person, a decision based on real numbers instead of a guess.
Ask for the Shamir Opulens Exact at the counter. It is cut to your own measurements rather than a stock curve, so the sharp zone lands exactly where your eyes actually sit in the frame you picked β the single thing an online order cannot do for you. If you need a pair the same day, ask about the Opulens Advanced 1.60, which is in stock and ready in 20 minutes.
Every pair includes a 1-year warranty, free lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and free lifetime custom fitting and adjustment. Bring your glasses in any time they slip β there is no charge, and there is no expiry on that.
